2nd Grade Expectations
Reading:
Guided Reading Level:
* 1st quarter = J
* 2nd quarter = K
* 3rd quarter = L
* 4th quarter = M
High Frequency Sight Words: Students are expected to recognize all words on
list by the end of the school year. The list is posted to the left.
AIMSweb Fluency (words read correct in one minute):
* 1st Quarter - 55 cwpm
2nd Quarter - 80 cwpm
3rd Quarter - 90 cwpm
4th Quarter - 92 cwpm
MAZE: a comprehension test. Students are given three minutes to read a passage where every 8th word is deleted and they must chose from three choices the word that makes sense.
* Fall = 5 correct answer choices
* Winter = 10 correct answer
choices
* Spring = 15 correct answer choices
Math:
AIMSweb Concepts and Application: an 8 minute test that assesses general problem solving skills in the areas of number sense, operations, patterns and relationships, data and probability, measurement, data and statistics, geometry, and algebra
*Fall expectation: 5 correct answers
*Winter expectation: 13 correct
*Spring expectation: 18 correct
AIMSweb Computation: an 8 minutes test that assesses the computational skills critical for mathematics success
*Fall expectation: 15 correct answers
*Winter expectation: 30 correct answers
*Spring expectation: 38 correct
We expect students to be secure with the following Common Core State Standards by the end of each quarter (secure being 90-100% accuracy):
First Quarter:
*Determine if a group of objects is even or odd (and writes an equation to show
two equal addends for an even number)
* Use addition to find the total number or objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns
* Hundreds, Tens and Ones - Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represents amounts of hundreds, tens and ones
* Skip Count - Count withing 1000, skip count by 5's 10's and 100's
* Numbers Different Ways - Read and write numbers to 100 using base ten numerals, names and expanded form
* Greater than, less than and equal to
* Add/Subt within 100
* Mentally Add/ Subt 10 and 100
*Fluently add and subtract within 20
Second Quarter:
*Solve addition and subtraction word problems
*Fluently add and subtract within 20
*Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work
* Add/ Subt within 100
* Add 4 2 digit numbers
* Add/Subt within 1000
Third Quarter:
*Measure the length of an object and identifies appropriate tools to use (ruler,
yardsticks, meter sticks, measuring tape, etc.)
*Measure an object using different units (in and cm) and compare the units
*Estimate the length of an object using units of in, ft, cm, and m
*Determine how much longer one object is compared to another
*Solve addition and subtraction word problems as it relates to measurement
*Measure multiple items and use data to generate a line plot
*Make bar graphs and answer simple problems about information represented in
bar graphs
*Identify the following shapes and their attributes: triangles, quadrilaterals,
pentagons, hexagons, and cubes
*Fluently add and subtract within 20
Fourth Quarter:
*Fluently add and subtract within 20
*Show numbers in different ways: written word, base-10 numerals, and expanded form
*Add and subtract 2-digit numbers within 100
*Add four 2-digit numbers
*Add and subtract 3-digit numbers within 1000
*Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 to a given number between 100-900
*Solve word problems involving coins and dollar bills, using dollar and cents signs
as appropriate
*Construct multiplication arrays and writes an equation that demonstrates
repeated addition
Writing:
All writing pieces are scored using the rubrics linked on the left of this page as writing resources. Students are expected to score a minimum of 3.0/5.0
